Glazed ceramic planter with a Japanese decoration

This extraordinary planter was made out of glazed ceramic in the 1880-1890’s by Theodore Deck. It has a very beautiful decor in shades of blue and green depicting the Asian fauna and flora. Indeed, we can find the representation of poppy flowers inhabited with butterflies and a tit.

Butterflies and parrot planter Cache-pot au perroquet et aux papillons

The dimensions of this piece make it quite extraordinary. Mesuring 46 cm high and 60 cm diameter, it’s a true masterpiece speaking of style and techinal aspects. Its perfect condition allows us to appreciate on a large surface the art of Théodore Deck. On the other hand what allows us to qualify this piece as a masterpiece is the absence of runs on the decor and the presence of the parot, which is really rare.

The collab with Joseph Chéret (1838-1894)

Théodore Deck and Joseph Chéret have collaborated together on many occasions to create earthenware vases, planters, bowls, and surtouts. Very often, sculpted characters or decoration in relief made by Chéret adorn the vase or the bowl made by Deck. In 1887, they work together  in the Manufacture de Sèvres, Deck as a director of the manufactory, and Chéret as a director of the works of art.

Joseph Gustave Chéret (1838-1894) is a Parisian sculptor, little brother of the important poster designer Jules Chéret. He was the student of Carrier-Belleuse, and married his daughter. He becomes a respected artist of the Salon in the 1880’s. When his father-in-law died in 1887, he replaces him as director of the works of art in the Manufacture de Sèvres. In 1891, he exhibits in the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, then becomes three years late, one of its member. In 1894, he also becomes knight of the Légion d’Honneur.
Joseph Chéret collaborated with Christofle, but also with well known artists such as Louis Royer and Théodore Deck.
